MidCentury Modern
This style can really be called the base to all of the other styles we have listed. At its core, it’s all about clean lines, functional furniture, and letting an accent piece be the star of a show. I like calling this style as having good bones. MCM is seen as classic, and has made a resurgence time after time, whether the general public knows it or not.
Boho
Boho is a fairly trendy style at the moment. I’m in plenty of Facebook groups where people are putting their own spin on a Boho aesthetic as well, so definitely think about joining some of those groups for a very wide range of inspiration! Bohemian style can be molded into other design styles as well, and I think that’s because most people utilize MidCentury Modern as their base. Some will add a farmhouse flair layered over top, especially since Farmhouse is still very widely loved in the Midwest, and is a very accessible design choice for the moment, or some will spend their time antique hunting for their perfect pieces. Whichever side of the spectrum you land, below are a few key features to keep in mind about Boho interior design to help you keep you focus clear.
Scandinavian (Hygge)
Something I learned when doing a little bit of research for this post, is that Scandinavian design style was an inspiration for MidCentury Modern! I don’t remember going much into Scandinavian Design when I was in college, so it was nice to learn this little bit of design history. MCM took from Scandinavian the clean lines, minimalism look from the hygge of the day, which is very clear to see as the line has been blurred between these two styles. If you’re looking to create a comfy cozy cabin retreat, below are some key features of Scandinavian Design to keep in mind.
Eclectic
Eclecticism is probably the hardest design to get right. This style is bold, fun, and can have a huge wow factor. The cautionary tale? It can sometimes seem like a bomb went off in the space, and the designer didn’t know which way was up. Although the ideal eclectic space that you may find online can be completely awe-inspiring if done right. Some of my tips would be to create a mood board. Use this board to define a scheme, the best way to keep your eclectic space looking magazine ready is to have a harmonizer, something that brings all of your pieces together. Whether that is a shape, emphasizing the curves of different furniture styles, or a tonal color that is woven through the space, these things will be sure to keep the eye moving and your brain from thinking… “what the hell happened here?”
I hope this little deep dive on the four design styles helps you get started on your projects. Again, if you haven’t already make sure to take our design quiz so you know which style you’re most drawn to!
