How To Embrace Your Evolving Style To Authentically Inspire Your Home Decor in 2025
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but your style will evolve. Actually, scratch thatāitās not bad news at all! Change is a sign of growth, and who wants to stay stagnant anyway?
Iāve seen it time and time again with clients who dream of buying the āperfectā timeless furniture theyāll keep forever. But life, style, and function shift over time. Kids grow up, your routines change, and that dream sofa might not make sense a decade later. And you know what? Thatās normal.
When I first moved into our home, I was a 20-year-old college student who hadnāt even chosen her major. My style was all about chevron prints and navy blue with coral accents. Hello, coral-and-gray wedding scheme. From there, lifeāand working in the design industryāexposed me to so much more, sparking an evolution thatās taught me countless lessons. Today, my style feels authentic and functional, but itās been a journey.

Where I Started: No Control Over My Space
Hereās hoping this resonates with someone: Iāve never lived alone. I went straight from my childhood home to my now-husbandās childhood home. For over a decade, we rented his familyās house, surrounded by 30-year-old carpet, plaster walls, and rooms filled with his familyās belongings.
It wasnāt my home, and I felt like I had no control over the space. Our layout wasnāt ideal, and while the rent was affordable, our budget didnāt allow for updates. So I channeled my creativity into school projects instead. Bold walls, feminine patterns, and lots of wallpaper became my dream aesthetic. Honestly, I still love those thingsāthough now Iām a bit pickier (no wallpaper accent walls, please).
The Boho Farmhouse Era
Like many others, I went through the farmhouse and boho phase. Our house is a farmhouse, so the style seemed to fit. I had a little more disposable income to upgrade furniture, and the distressed finishes and whimsical accents spoke to my inner child.
But after a few years, I realized Iād fallen for a trend that wasnāt truly me. Farmhouse didnāt align with my personal style, and even with a design degree, I couldnāt quite put my finger on what did. Itās a reminder that even professionals arenāt immune to trendsāand thatās okay, too.
I even have clients who have farmhouse accents in their home, but felt like all of their furniture & decor they had accumulated over the years didnāt match and just felt like a hodge-podge that they forced into this aesthetic. And, they werenāt wrong.
Even if you live in a farmhouse or midcentury modern home or WHATEVER and it doesnāt feel aligned to you and your current aesthetic, that is okay. Iām here to help marry your true authentic style with the home you are in. We are here to love and honor our homes and make them work for us, not us to transform into them.
A client I wrapped up this past year totally had the hodge-podge look, she never was against her farmhouse accents, they had just remodeled their kitchen and living area and added this cute shiplap accent to their more modern fireplace & gorgeous island, but wanted to modernize the space and make it more comfortable in the process. We were able to honor the farmhouse accents in their space by finding furniture that had similar wood panel details, while modernizing the rest of the room with iron accents, a comfortable transitional sofa, and sleek leather swivel chairs.

I truly believe we can marry any styles together that we like, while still honoring the home to not feel like Frank Lloyd Wright stepped foot into a Farmhouse renovation.
Where I Am Now: A Style That Grows With Me
As we renovate our forever home, Iāve reflected on all the iterations and trends Iāve embraced over the years. Each phase taught me something new about how I want to live.
Today, my style is rooted in growth and authenticity. Iām drawn to deep, bold paint colors, floral textiles, and intentional touches of wallpaper. More importantly, Iāve learned not to pigeonhole myselfāor my clientsāinto one rigid style. Homes should reflect where you are in life, with room to evolve as you do.
Trends will come and go, but your home should always feel like you. And if the next trend speaks to you? Find a way to incorporate it thoughtfully. After all, design isnāt about perfection; itās about creating a space that grows alongside you.
Embracing Evolution in Your Home
Your home is a living, breathing reflection of your journeyāchanging as you grow, adapt, and discover new facets of yourself. Itās okay to love a trend one year and outgrow it the next. Whatās important is that your space evolves with you, staying authentic to who you are and how you live.
Design isnāt about achieving a perfectly timeless look or nailing your style once and for all. Itās about creating a home that feels like youāa sanctuary that brings you comfort, joy, and inspiration at every stage of life.
So, give yourself the freedom to grow in your space. After all, a home isnāt just a place you liveāitās a canvas for your story, one layer at a time.
