My Quick Multi-Use Craft Room And Home Office Refresh

This might come as a shock – but I’m not a home decor DIY-girlie. I know, it seems like being an interior designer and DIY’ing everything in your home goes hand-in-hand, but I’m just not savvy with any of it. Power tools are not a part of my vocabulary, not because I’m unable to, I just don’t enjoy it.

Despite all of this, I decided to do as much of my own little renovation of my home office/craft room as possible. I consider this more of a refresh, we didn’t pull down any of the plaster or add outlets or anything, so it was all fairly cosmetic. I am beyond proud and excited about this refresh though. For a long time this multi-use space had issues with storage and organization solutions, peeling old plaster, and a shitty paint job. (The original color I painted the room when I moved in was blue when I thought it would be grey, so I did one crappy thin coat of white paint over it and never came back to fix it.)

Finally, it was time for the update. I decided on a paint color and new storage bookcases, and the rest of the details fell into place. My goal for the space was to transform this room into a space that truly reflects my style, creativity, and passion. With a little elbow grease and a lot of enthusiasm, I finally did it! I’m excited to share the process and the results with you all.

A Fresh Coat of Paint (And Then Some)

First things first: the paint. I decided to go all-in with color drenching. For those unfamiliar, that means painting the ceiling and walls the same color. I chose a rich, bold hue that screams creativity and energy. The result? A stunning, cohesive look that’s both dramatic and inviting. To balance things out, I used a creamy white paint for the trim, which adds just the right touch of elegance without stealing the show or being too stark of a contrast. The wall color needed to match my clothing style too, I wanted the backdrop of what I see in the mirror to compliment my skin tone and clothing color choices.

Good-Bye Carpeting! Hello Peel & Stick Tiles

Next up, I tackled the floor. The old carpeting had to go. I’d never laid tiles before, but peel-and-stick tiles made it surprisingly easy. After pulling out the carpet (thank you hubby for this one), I carefully installed the new tiles. The transformation was immediate – the room felt cleaner, more modern, and ready for action. Plus, I learned a new skill along the way, which was incredibly satisfying!

A few things I would do differently next time for the peel and stick flooring, is add a new subfloor layer. If I wasn’t on such a tight timeline to get back into my space for work, I would have liked to add this in. Because it’s such an old farmhouse, I can feel the very slight inconsistencies in the original flooring between planks.

Smart Storage Solutions

One of my main goals was to create a space that’s not only beautiful but functional. I added a few new furniture pieces specifically for storage. Now, all my craft supplies have a dedicated and closable spot, which keeps the room tidy and makes it so much easier to find what I need when I’m in the zone. I can hide away any clutter from smaller crafts I don’t do quite as often, while showcasing some of my favorite yarns and fabric.

When it comes to fiber crafts, you do have to worry about bugs – most notably moths. They love yarn, and can destroy your stash if you aren’t careful. I opted to get some new Billy bookcases from Ikea with the Oxberg door add-ons. These are tried and true pieces that everyone knows and loves from Ikea, in a new-to-me color that matches the flooring in the rest of the house, helping my room to stay cohesive with the whole home design. I love that they close to make sure the ickies and any dust stays out, while the glass top keeps everything I want to see on display. I upgraded the knobs to match my new light fixture!

A Door Dilemma Solved

Living in an old farmhouse has its quirks – like doors that don’t open the right way. My office door was one of those quirks. Since I never shut it anyway, I decided to remove it altogether. This simple change made the room feel more open and accessible, and it eliminated a minor daily annoyance that prevented use of the wall behind because I kept the door propped open. Sometimes, the best solutions are the simplest ones!

A Space That Reflects My Style

Ultimately, my goal was to create a space that’s bold, creative, and a perfect backdrop for everything from Zoom meetings to finished seeing or knitting projects. The room now feels like a true reflection of my style in both home decor and fashion. It’s vibrant, functional, and uniquely mine. Whether I’m working, crafting, or just enjoying the space, it inspires me every day.

Do you have a crafting or working space you’re struggling with? I’d love to hear what you do and what’s working in your space, and what’s not. Trust me, this space was the craft-supply-pit-of-doom until two weeks ago. 🤦🏼‍♀️ Tell me about your craft room dreams in the comments!
